Welcome to our PMU Sterilization & Safety Series where we bring you the knowledge, critical thinking and technical skills to help you keep you and your clients healthy and SAFE.

This is Part 1 of a Multi-part series on Safety for PMU Artists and the clients we serve.

Today we are walking through an optimal and thorough approach of a proper safe station set up. To easily understand our approach we have defined our supplies/equipment into three categories of importance:

CRITICALSupplies/equipment that punctures skin or enters tissues of the body.

SEMI-CRITICALSupplies/Equipment that come into contact with mucous membrane or non-intact skin, but is not intended to puncture or penetrate skin.

NON-CRITICALSupplies/Equipment that touch only hair or intact skin.

Disclaimer: The following practices and processes are derived from our personal and collective experiences as Permanent Makeup artists', colleagues & educators. It is not intended to be prescriptive or expert advice, it is to supplement and enhance existing knowledge. We recommend ALWAYS adhering to standards of your health authority guidelines of your local area.

Good, that's out of the way...let's DIVE IN NOW SHALL WE?

SAFE SET UP - Tray Checklist

1 - Pre-Treatment Tray (non-critical): Mapping/Consult Tray

2 - Treatment tray (semi-critical/critical): Treatment Tray

NOTE: Your treatment tray and your pre-treatment tray can be the same tray, however anything that is reusable that cannot be sterilized MUST be off your tray before you open the skin.

TRAY SET UP SIMPLIFIED: Items on your tray are only THOSE USED in treatment. WITH ALL SINGLE USE DISPOSABLE, as soon as it has been used THROW IT IN THE TRASH BIN/BIO BAG. Keep your tray neat, tidy, and most importantly SANITARY.

Tray & Surface Protection 2 layer approach - Layer 1: Preferred plastic wrap. Layer Two: Barrier bib.

After the tray is properly wrapped, assemble in DESCENDING order of criticality (see above)

So far we have clearly defined our equipment and supplies into distinct CRITICAL categories, we have walked through technical tray set up and considerations and provided you with the tools you need to do your own SAFE SET UP with confidence! And there is SO MUCH MORE to come! Our next instalment in this series is the ever-important TIDY TEAR DOWN. We can't wait to share our tips and tricks with you and help you work SMARTER & SAFER!
